TABITHA OFFERED AN abundance of unappetizing foods one after the other as if launching them at her guests.

“Fairy butter,” Tabitha said, placing a tub of something yellow and gooey into Carissa’s hands.

The fae sifted through more items in a large bin Carissa assumed was her form of a refrigerator.

“I don’t have any flower petals to spread them on, sorry.” Tabitha’s slender fingers tapped the edge of the box as she peered inside.

Carissa gently set the tub of fairy butter on the table in the tylwyth teg’s kitchen and looked at Holly. Crimbal walked right out of the room in a huff. Carissa leaned back to see where he was going. To the couch in the sitting room, apparently.

“Your home is not quite what it used to be,” Holly said, brushing a finger on the wall and holding it up to show Carissa the dust.

Tabitha closed the food box and twirled back to the bin.

“Many things are not what they used to be,” the tylwyth teg said. A faraway look came into Tabitha's eyes, and they flashed brightly before fading. They were the oddest shade. Carissa sometimes thought they were blue, sometimes purple, and other times black. “I’m not what I used to be,” Tabitha remarked.

“Well, we can help you with that, dear,” Holly said.

“No!” Tabitha’s sharp reply caused Carissa to shrink back.

So far, Cari hadn’t said or done anything, but this woman’s behavior was odd, and they didn’t seem to be learning anything from her.

“We were hoping you could help us,” Carissa said. “Some of the Mossie children are…ill…and we think there’s a plant in your garden that could help us.”

“Ill children?” Tabitha clutched the fairy butter like it was a bundled infant, holding it tight. The fae woman looked at Holly. “That’s why you’ve come?”

The hurt in her eyes was unmistakable. Holly took a chair and looked up at Carissa.

“Would you give us a moment, love?”

Carissa didn’t like the idea of leaving Holly alone with the eccentric fae, but she nodded and slowly retreated to the room where Crimbal sat. She found him gazing down the hallway as if he'd seen a ghost. The floorboard creaked. Crimbal turned. He threw her a disinterested grimace as she crossed the room.

“Disgusting,” he said.

It took Cari a minute to determine he was talking about the state of the house and not Carissa’s arrival.

“I thought tylwyth tegs were supposed to be good caretakers,” she replied.

“They are,” he said, “but Tabitha’s been on her own too long. She’s gone a bit goblin, I think.”

Carissa ignored the remark. It was an insulting stereotype to think all goblins were slobs, especially since she’d found out that her friend Sal was half-goblin. The servant to Head-Elf Rolin was anything but messy. Still, Carissa had stereotyped Otto for being a troll working in finance, so she supposed it was hypocritical to be offended.

She joined him at the edge of the room and peered down the eerie, dark hallway.

There was no sound coming from the supposedly empty parts of the home.
